Crucian Tree Of Life
St. Croix has captivated many people’s hearts with its beauty, culture and most importantly, its people.
The original inhabitants of St. Croix were the Carib Indians. St. Croix has been owned by different nations, seven to be specific, each reign brought its people and hence a unique culture to the island. Under Danish rule African slaves were brought to St. Croix. The slaves brought a beautiful tree, the Boa-Boa tree to St. Croix, some of which are few hundred years old. Out of the chaos brought about by the reign of different nations, we have this unique set of people and the unique culture. We think of it as out of many, one people.
The Boa-Boa tree reminds me of St. Croix’s past and can clearly be seen in the pendant and earrings, and the beginning, the Carib Indians, is reflected by the petroglyph symbol in the piece. When originally created this piece took seven components to complete. This piece encompasses a storyline of St. Croix’s past and to me represents the future to come – an island with strong people that will grow, just as a tree grows, with strong roots, a good foundation. I wish all those who wear this piece a long and prosperous life just as the Boa – Boa Tree has had in St. Croix
